Einstein once remarked that if he had improved our view of the world, it was because "he was standing on the shoulders of giants."  This course will examine the science careers of six women considered giants in their fields:  Marie Lavoisier (chemistry); Marie Curie (nuclear science); Henrietta Leavitt (astronomy); Rachel Carson (environmental science); Stephanie Kwolek (polymer science); and Rosalind Franklin (genetics).  Their stories are filled with frustration, Nobel prizes won and lost, hardships within two world wars and two revolutions, scientific deception---and compassion and determination.  Learn how these women triumphed in spite of it all.  Held on Wednesdays, April 27, 24, and May 1, 8.  Taught by David Tucker, retired science teacher and adjunct faculty member at Western Washington University.  He is a recipient of the NSF Presidential Award for Excellence in Teaching, and holds fellowships from AT&T Bell Laboratories, DuPont and Genentech.  $79 per person.  Please pre-register at https://ee-portal.wwu.edu/coursedisplay.cfm?schID=1748
