This course explores the history of the Byzantine Empire, from the fall of Western Empire through the medieval period. From rather humble beginnings as a Greek village, Byzantium (Constantinople) would grow to become the greatest city in the Middle Ages. Long after the fall of the Western Roman Empire, the Eastern Roman Empire endured and helped shape the future of Western Europe and the Middle East. Explore the major events which led to the great schism between the Roman and Orthodox Church, as well as the foundation of early eastern kingdoms. (Wednesdays, Jan. 29; February 5, 12, 19, 26; March 4.) $99 per person for the course. For more information, and to regisster, please go to wwu.edu/AllPeninsulas.
