Sharing Sycamore: A Natural Retreat In Kingston
11/01/2007
When Kinam Sohn purchased one of Kingston’s architectural jewels in 2004, she didn’t imagine that three years later The Retreat at Sycamore would be open for business. Sohn, a local real estate broker specializing in residential and commercial properties in Kitsap County, had initially imagined Sycamore as her home.
But because of its easy access from Miller Bay Road and the Kingston Ferry, it wasn’t long before she saw how it could become a perfect weekend getaway, corporate retreat or special event facility… and a smart business opportunity. While walking beneath the dozens of sycamore trees that line its driveway Kinam told me, “It’s been fun sharing Sycamore with people who see what a special place it is.”
The home is about 4,000 square feet of spectacular Northwest architecture. Kinam and her husband, well-known local builder Eric Fredricks of Fredricks Fine Homes, made significant investments of time and capital to restore the property. Sycamore includes the main house and the Garden Suite. The Suite includes a spacious bedroom, a walk-in closet, huge private bathroom, indoor soaking tub and an outdoor Jacuzzi. The windows and walls feature work by Northwest artists. Apart from the Suite are three additional bedrooms and a loft. The house also features a formal dining room, galley kitchen, river rock fireplace, grand piano, satellite television, a DVD/karaoke machine, den area, and wireless internet access. Guests are given the option of renting the entire house, or the Garden Suite alone. Based on its bookings so far, Sycamore has shown itself to be a versatile property. “We’ve hosted couples, strategic planning retreats and even a Korean traditional dance troupe that performed here last year,” says Kinam.
Sycamore is nestled among 15 rolling wooded acres adjacent to hundreds of acres of protected forest; natural tranquility truly sets Sycamore apart. For example, an impressive waterfall, koi pond and entertainment patio, a flower garden with the outdoor Jacuzzi, a meditative path featuring a large stone pagoda and “floating” bridge wrap around a large pond frequented by herons, ducks and deer.
Since launching Sycamore’s website this fall (www.sycamoreretreat.com), Kinam says that interest has grown considerably. The extensive website includes booking information, guest testimonials and extensive photo gallery. She says that other Kingston Chamber of Commerce members have been generous with their advice and support and she is excited to formally introduce Sycamore to the greater Kingston community.
