Improve Your Google Rankings

Any web site worth its salt should be available from Google, ranked so that people looking for it can find it on the first page. Google wants just two things: ORIGINAL CONTENT and INCOMING LINKS.
ORIGINAL CONTENT
Google wants words. Lots of words. Words that are unique to your site. Words are the basis for any Google ranking. It’s hard, but you need to write text for your pages. Be detailed. Add newsletter articles or a blog. If you’re selling products, write a paragraph about each.
Don’t plagiarize or reuse content. If you copy text from another site, then Google will ignore it. Do that a lot, and Google will drop you entirely.
Use your key words. That’s the words people will use to find you in Google. Your business name should be the most important of key words. Use your key words a lot, and Google will rank you better. Don’t get carried away into writing senseless content, or the Google Cops will penalize you. Do include a copyright notice on every page with your business name.
INCOMING LINKS
Google wants to see if other sites link to you. Links INTO your site support your credibility and relevance. Contact the owners of other relevant web sites and get them to link to you. At very least, get the Chamber and other organizations to which you belong to give you a link.
Avoid outgoing links, or links from your site to others. They send traffic away from your site. However, it is sometimes necessary to exchange links with other relevant sites.
Internal links between pages within your site are also helpful. Google recognizes that links within a site help visitors to navigate better and often indicate a lot of interesting content. See Wikipedia.org, for example.
DON’TS
- Don’t use Flash for content. Google is blind to it.
- Don’t use graphical text for your company name, titles or menus, unless your web master also inserts “alt text” into each graphic.
- Don’t depend on “metatags” for your content.
- Don’t plagiarize or subscribe to a content service.
- Don’t join linking schemes or link farms, or Google will drop you.
- Don’t force people to enter a search field to find your content. Google can’t use search fields.
