In Remembrance of Kathleen Sutton
05/14/2004
by Barbara Kitchens
No matter her condition, Kathleen Sutton was always working, always trying to make Kingston, the Little City by the Sea a better place to live. From her tenure as chamber president to making sure Kingston’s historic Independence Day parade went as planned, nothing stopped her from getting the job done. Sutton died April 19 in Seattle after battling breast cancer for more than six years. She was 60.
What Is Grief
- by Michele Young
What Is Grief?
Who really knows?
How to do it—and—how it goes.
Grief I’m told is letting go,
Be it right or be it wrong,
Words and feelings to our own song.
Memories flood the tears in our eyes.
Do you think our loved one hears our cries?
And how the heart aches to no end,
Even knowing that our loved ones’ peace will send.
To feel so lonely and filled with fear,
I wonder if the Lord does truly hear?
So our days go by hour by hour,
As we smile and carry on with all our power.
We stay busy, sometimes too busy to see,
And notice in God, we truly need thee.
Our nights are filled with restless sleep,
Even knowing you’re in God’s keep.
We wake from slumber in the early morning light,
To weep our loved one, now, out of sight,
We toss and turn and try to pray,
Please Lord help us through another day!
And on the day where silence was once cherished,
This too, has somehow perished.
Alone we fight the pain, the loss, the sorrow,
While waiting for a bright tomorrow.
We try to understand words that feel so cold.
We try to forgive, we try to be bold.
We smile that smile.
We walk that walk.
We love unconditionally as we feel the pain of their talk.
We do desperately grieve inside,
And try to live as God abides.
For our pain and sorrow runs so deep,
So deep that no one can see us weep.
So grief they say, as they point their finger,
Get over it, it’s done, don’t let it linger.
But “we” know it doesn’t matter how many days go by.
Our hearts will always know how to cry.
So tell me, what is grief and who really knows,
How to do it and how it goes?

She was a vivid character in Kingston as a member of the Kingston Chamber of Commerce, Kingston Kiwanis, Kingston Yacht Club and the Kitsap County Association of Relators. Sutton was very active in working to bring passenger-only ferries to Kingston and served as a member of the local POF committee. She was also the director of Kingston’s famous 4th of July parade in 2001 and 2002. Sutton was recognized for her work in the community with various honors, including the Helen Meredith Award for community service, the Don and Ellen Nakata Community Hero Award in 2002 and the John L. Scott Emerald Award.
Aside from making sure Kingston’s chamber was helping the local economy and community events were taking place as scheduled, her professional life was just as busy. Sutton was a real estate broker and owner of Appletree Cove Realty until 1997 when she joined the John L. Scott office in Kingston as a sales associate. Her other professional careers included working for the Canadian government as a helicopter pilot for fire patrol and animal management. She also ran a helicopter tour program at local fairs in the Northwest. On the water, she assisted and piloted yachts for a yacht delivery service, including transporting the vessels along both the East and West Coasts. Sutton also had a fixed-wing aircraft pilot license and drove race cars in the Powder Puff Derby. Friends and co-workers said she made a big impact on those who crossed her path. Sutton was also well-known for annually organizing her “Flo On for the Cure,” team for the Susan B. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation Race for the Cure event in Seattle. Sutton’s team was one of the largest non-corporate fund-raisers for the event.
