"WHERE WILL THE POLAR BEARS GO?"
08/02/2007
by Naomi Maasberg
Climate Change and Our Largest Bear — Thursday, August 9 — 7:00 PM — at Kingston Fire Hall on Miller Bay Road (26442 Miller Bay Road) — $ 10 donation includes materials and snack.
The Arctic and its inhabitants are indicators of the effects of climate change; polar bears are one key species studied by NOAA researchers. Our presenter is Dr. James Overland, who will review climate and ecosystem information related to the survival of polar bears and lead a discussion on the issues raised. James Overland is an Oceanographer with the National Oceanic Atmospheric Administration (NOAA).
Polar Bears have been a favorite of many of us, remembering the amazing huge bears from our trips to the zoo, but they are even more on the minds of people today. This may be due in part to an improved understanding of the ecology and life of polar bears, their environment, and the effects of climate change on this huge, beautiful, and fiercest of the North American bears. Results of years of research and study are now available to us, piquing our interest even further.
What have we learned? Come hear a personable and amusing NOAA researcher, Dr. Jim Overland, at "Where Will the Polar Bears Go?" He will show his slides and describe what he has learned from the polar bear and changes to its habitat in the midst of climate change.
