"Nighttime Predators" Stalking at Stillwaters
In this 2-part class taught by Dr. Scott Sweet, Stillwaters students (adults and children) will learn about the different types of nocturnal predators that make North Kitsap their home. All you'll need is an excellent flashlight, long pants, a light jacket, and the ability to not make a sound for over an hour while we are calling animals.
On Saturday, August 12, from 9-11:30 a.m., we will meet in our outdoor education pavilion at Stillwaters in Kingston. We will have an hour-long discussion on the natural history of common nocturnal birds and mammals. Students will search for tracks and make casts. Finally we will prepare for the next Saturday by establishing viewing stations, setup the stealth, digital motion detector camera, and practice our communication skills and our nocturnal predator calls.
In Part 2 on Saturday, August 19th, from 7:30-10:00 p.m., we will meet again in the outdoor pavilion at Stillwaters. We will begin with a viewing of the weeklong video footage from the sample station, go to our viewing station, and very quietly begin calling predators. We will finish when the coyotes and raccoons call it a night by about 10:00 p.m.
The cost for both sessions is $25, $45 for a family, which includes snacks. Children must be accompanied by an adult. To register, call Joleen at Stillwaters at 360-297-2876.
